BEHIND THE MUSIC

Requiem for a Soldier

Some songs are born from a single moment of inspiration. Others emerge from a lifetime of experiences, quietly gathering meaning until they demand to be heard. For Natalja, "Requiem for a Soldier" falls firmly in the latter category – a debut solo release that crystallized from decades of lived history, gratitude, and transformation.

A Voice for Those Who Truly Listen

Latvian-born mezzo-soprano Natalja Sticco stands apart in the operatic world—not merely as a performer, but as an experience. Acclaimed for her uncommon vocal richness and commanding stage presence, she brings a rare depth to the dramatic mezzo-soprano repertoire, channeling the power and grandeur of opera’s golden age.

“Natalja’s voice soars with amazing resonance and brio… reminiscent of opera’s most legendary voices.”
— Sir Simon Rattle, OM CBE

Natalja’s journey began as a Young Artist with the Latvian National Opera & Ballet, where she quickly gained extensive stage experience. She was accepted into the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, continuing to perform full-time in the LNO chorus while completing her studies. This foundation led to a career marked by commanding interpretations of Verdi’s Azucena (Il Trovatore), Eboli (Don Carlo), and Ulrica (Un ballo in maschera), as well as Bizet’s Carmen. in 2017, following seven seasons with LNO, Natalja broke out as a soloist in the United States in 2018.

She continues to hone her craft under some of opera’s most revered pedagogues, including Diana Soviero, one of the 20th century’s greatest dramatic sopranos, and Maestro Paolo De Napoli, a renowned coach whose students perform on the world’s leading stages. Their guidance has helped shape her artistry into what critics call “a rare, true Verdi mezzo.”

Having performed on esteemed stages from the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow to the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Natalja has collaborated with some of opera’s greatest artists, including Jonas Kaufmann, Kristine Opolais, and Elina Garanca.

A true artist of the stage, Natalja lets the music speak for itself.
